Amid disasters, a preacher holds fast to his faith in Haiti
Read the USA Today story of a Job-like pastor in Haiti: “In 2003, a year and a half after his wedding, Sainton’s wife became ill and was hospitalized. She tested positive for HIV. He took the test, too, and tested positive. The news, he says, came as a shock.” …and pray for him. (HT: @PastorMark)
On the Pursuit of Success
Success. Here, in Orange County, it’s either have it or get eaten alive. How should the Christian respond tho this sentiment?
Adapting from Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion, our friends at Desiring God outline Calvin’s notes on the pursuit of success. He answers:
- How do we as Christians battle against the sinful pursuit of success, wealth and power that the world pursues?
- How, then, can the Christian rightly pursue success?
- How should we as Christians think about our lack of success?
Happy 448th Birthday, Heidleberg Catechism!
Umm, what’s a Heidleberg? Great question. The Heidleberg Catechism (1563) is a commentary on (1) the Apostles’ Creed, (2) the Ten Commandments, and (3) the Lord’s Prayer. It is a systematic collection of the most important truths of our faith. It is also one of the most widely circulated books in human history. In this article, Fred Sanders calls it “one of the best pieces of theology ever written” and explains why you should read it. [note: ignore the title's typo; it is 448, not 446] (HT: JT)
What Made David Great
Kevin DeYoung posted his article from this month’s edition of Tabletalk: “Everyone who knows the Bible knows that King David was a great man…And yet everyone familiar with the Bible will also recognize that David did a lot of not-so-great things.”
On the Gospel
Tullian Tchivijian invited his friend Scotty Smith to provide his thoughts on the gospel. Tchivijian blogged some of the “pure gospel gold” that Smith responded with.
