God’s Broken Image

I have a lot of books on my bookshelf that I need to read. Sometimes, it feels like I collect them more than I actually read them. The other day, I decided to pick up one of the books I had been wanting to read for awhile: The Christian Life by Sinclair Ferguson. I’m into the second chapter of the book, “God’s Broken Image.” In it, Dr. Ferguson lays out the four primary effects of sin as:

  1. The image of God defaced
  2. Man under the dominion of sin and death
  3. Man guilty before God
  4. Man in the grip of Satan

After painting a picture of how sin has wreaked havok among humanity, he states the following:

  1. We need re-creation by Christ in order that the image of God, once distorted by sin, may be restored.
  2. We need deliverance from the dominion of sin in order that we may live freely for God.
  3. We need to be rescued from the power of Satan so that our lives may be given to Christ the Lord as his glad bondslaves.
  4. We need to be saved from the wrath of God so that, released from this most terrifying of all prospects, we may live the life of forgiven sinners. It is the glory of the gospel that meets our need.

The first list outlines the devastating affects of sin. The second list tells of the triumphant victory of God and His grace, through love.

God is re-creating us into His image once again—through His Son Jesus Christ—for those that have placed their faith in the Savior. This is good news!
