Resolution #23
Resolved, Frequently to take some deliberate action, which seems most unlikely to be done, for the glory of God, and trace it back to the original intention, designs, and ends of it; and if I find it not to be for God’s glory, to repute it as a breach of the fourth Resolution.
Ah! The downfall of most is pride. Pride in our accomplishments, reputation, and worth. Working towards the exaltation of ourselves, and not boasting in the gracious, saving work of God Almighty. Adam took of the forbidden fruit, for he thought he deserved to taste of its sweetness. Jonah was put up in the belly of the fish, for he felt he knew best about where the truth should be proclaimed. Judas swayed from a dead branch, for he desired to have the earthly riches of a wealthy man. All of mankind has been lead astray by the snare of pride. How I yearn for the mind of Edwards, and pray for God to grant me the strength to do as this resolution intends.
Even the everyday mundane things in life, such as work, can become such a barrier in our faith. Why do I work, and what is its ultimate goal? To take care of my family and children, to have nice things and enjoy the simple pleasures of life? The initial answer is, honestly, yes. But again, this is the mind of pride for we should say, “I work so I may honor God, and ultimately exalt Christ in and through my work.” May God provide us correct discernment in this area so we can examine our actions and throw out that which is not found to be for His glory.
